Bedri Baykam 1957 yılında Ankara’da doğdu. İki yaşında resim yapmaya başlayan Baykam’ın işleri, altı yaşından bugüne kadar Bern, Geneva, New York, Washington, Paris, London, Rome, Munich, Stockholm, San Francisco, Berlin başta olmak üzere tüm dünyada sergilenmeye başladı.
1975-80 arasında Paris’te Sorbonne Üniversitesi’nde ekonomi, L’Actorat’da aktörlük tahsili yaptı. 1980-1983 yıllarında, California College of Arts and Crafts’de resim ve sinema eğitimi gördü. 80’li yıllarda başlayan uluslararası Yeni Dışavurumculuk Akımı’nın öncülerinden olan Baykam, 1987 yılına kadar Amerika’da kaldı. O tarihte İstanbul’a geri dönen Baykam bugüne kadar yarısı uluslararası olmak üzere 125 kişisel sergi açtı, sayısız grup sergisine katıldı. Yurtiçi ve yurtdışında çeşitli müze ve koleksiyonlarda eserleri bulunan sanatçının eserleri ABD, Çin, Kore, İngiltere, Fransa, Almanya, Hollanda, Kanada, Arjantin, Japonya, İsveç, Gürcistan, Makedonya, Finlandiya ve Mısır’da sergilendi. Birçok kısa metrajlı film ve video çekti, aktörlük yaptı. Baykam 80’lerde ayrıca New York’un çehresini değiştiren graffiti sanatçılarından biri oldu. 80’lerden itibaren standart hale getirdiği büyük boy işleri, politika ve erotizmi çağdaş sanat ortamımıza taşıyan sanatçı, son beş yıldır, yıllardır üzerinde çalıştığı, dijital ve boyasal saydam katmanlar serilerinin uzantısı olarak, tüm dünyada büyük ilgi gören 4-D “Dört Boyutlu” işler üretmeye başladı.
UNESCO’ya bağlı Uluslararası Plastik Sanatlar Derneği’nin de kurucularından ve halen bu örgütün Türkiye Ulusal Komitesi Başkanı olan Baykam, aynı zamanda IAA Avrupa ve IAA Dünya’nın Yönetim Kurulu’nda bulunuyor. Kendisi aynı zamanda Cumhuriyet gazetesi yazarı ve eski CHP Parti Meclisi Üyesi. Baykam, 23 kitabın yazarı ve hakkında yayınlanmış 50 katalog ve 5 kitap bulunuyor.
Taksim’de bulunan Piramid Sanat’ın (2006) kurucusu olan sanatçı, çalışmalarını İstanbul’da sürdürmektedir.

Artist – Intellectual Writer…
One of Turkey’s internationally most well-known artists and intellectuals, Bedri Baykam was born in 1957, in Ankara, Turkey. His father Dr. Suphi Baykam was a famous deputy in the Turkish parliament and his mother Mutahhar Baykam an architect-engineer. He started to paint when he was only two years old, and has had several exhibitions since the age of six in Bern, Geneva, New York, Washington, London, Rome, Munich, Stockholm, etc. during his childhood years, when he was known as a child prodigy, (wunderkind) throughout the world. Baykam also obtained many prestigious titles as a tennis player throughout the 70s at Turkish Championships and played several international tournaments.
He studied at the Sorbonne University in Paris from 1975 to 1980 and got an MBA degree. During this time, he also studied drama in L’Actorat, Paris. He lived in California during the years 1980 -1987, studied painting and filmmaking at the California College of Arts and Crafts, in Oakland between (1980-1983). He had several shows in New York, California and Paris. He returned to Turkey in 1987 and has been living in Istanbul since. He has had 125 one-man-shows in various countries in addition to participating to numerous group shows. One of his most well-known books, “Monkeys’ Right to Paint” published in Turkish and English, brings to light the rights of non western artists and severely criticizes the one sided prejudiced attitude of the western art establishment that he accuses building a one sided, all western art-history. Baykam is also the writer of a controversial bestseller “The Bone”, published in December 2000. A turn of the Century novel around sex, death, philosophy new sciences, technology and spying, “The Bone” predicted the events of September 11, ten months before it happened in all its details! “The Bone” has been published English in 2005, and in Italian in 2007. Baykam is one of the pioneers of the New-Expressionism movement and of multi-media and photo-painting oriented political art. Since the beginning of the 80’s, he directed several 16 mm. short films and videos he has acted in several parts in feature films in Turkey as an actor. He is the author of 23 published books.
Baykam has been working actively for several institutions as a political activist, taking the defense of Turkey as a secular democratic country respecting fully all human rights. He has been one of the main spokesmen of the Kemalist movement since the eighties and has he writes in the leftist – democratic daily Cumhuriyet. He was a Party Assembly Member of CHP in 90’s. He is still an active member of the Party. He is one of the central characters of the Turkish intellectual and political milieu since the 80’s.
Baykam is one of the founders of the Turkish Plastic Arts Association (UPSD) within the International Art Association (IAA), which is a partner NGO with UNESCO. The artist has been the President of UPSD-Turkish National Committee since 2006 and he is in the Executive Committee of IAA Europe and IAA World. Baykam is also the founder of the film production and publishing company Piramid and Piramid Sanat (www.piramidsanat.com) both based in Istanbul.
He married journalist Sibel Baykam in May 1997, and they had Suphi, their son, in January 1999.
